Hindu Physicians International (HPI): A Concept Note
Hindu Physicians International (HPI), Inc is a Dharmic, faith-based charitable (nonprofit) organization incorporated in the USA in 2022 and is currently registered in the state of New York. HPI is rooted in principles of sanctity of life, universality of human suffering and the need for collective effort to improve the lot of humanity. HPI manifests these principles through various global charitable healthcare initiatives, disaster relief and other volunteer interventions in the service of humanity. HPI in its previous Avatar was founded and incorporated in the State of Minnesota in 2005.
Why was HPI formed?
Hinduism (also known as Sanatana Dharma) is one of mankind’s oldest (if not the oldest, living religious, philosophical and spiritual traditions that has been uninterruptedly practiced since the dawn of civilization. With at least 1.2 billion followers worldwide or more than 15% of the world’s population Hinduism has many unique and distinctive characteristics that it shares with other Dharmic religions that emerged over the past centuries from the spiritually fertile environment of the Indian sub-continent. With enduring and inspiring philosophical tenants such as Vasudhaiva kutumbakam (Humanity as one family), Manava Sewa Madhava Sewa (serving God through serving humanity) and Tat Tvam Asi (divinity and bliss within everyone), Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) provides the best opportunity for individual as well as collective growth and evolution as human race. In a world that is divided by narrow boundaries of race, ethnicity, religion and nationality, HPI is committed to upholding Hindu values and providing multifaceted humanitarian, volunteer services and charitable healthcare to the needy based on these values. These shared religious-philosophical tenets include a respect for all living beings, commitment to non-violence (with a right to self-defend), reverence for Nature and the environment, Bhakti, Dharmic conduct and Sewa. Hindus don’t proselytize. Hindus accept the divinity of all living beings and don’t indulge in “othering” of humanity by dividing people among believers and non-believers.
Is faith-based charity an anomaly and why should Hindus get involved?
There are a multitude of faith-based medical charities that provide disaster relief and humanitarian services based on their set of ideals and objectives (see attached list). Hindu organizations are glaring by their absence. The Hindu civilization is now on the path of resurgence after a thousand years of religious-social-political bondage. There can be no better time than now for Hindus to unitedly set up a faith based charitable organization with Dharmic foundations and Hinduism centered approach for the purpose of providing self-less service (Sewa) to humanity
Membership
Membership of HPI is open to all healthcare professionals belonging to and taking pride in Dharmic and Indic religious traditions. We have self-confidence in our Hindu/Indic identity. We reject proselytization and view mankind as one global community (vasudhaiva kutumbakam).
Service
HPI will provide selfless service to anyone and everyone without any consideration of religion, personal belief, color of skin, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or geographic location. We aim to be self-reliant, dynamic and focused on delivering healthcare, relief and wellness promotion based on medically established objective and scientific principles. Our service and message are universal. Some people do question the name of the organization because it mentions the word Hindu in it. Other religious groups like Christians, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, and others have numerous faith-based medical and dental organizations. In addition to these, they also have hundreds of other faith-based organizations to promote their cause. We do believe that it would be tantamount to Hinduphobia to oppose or question HPI for including the word Hindu in the organization’s name. Such criticism would be considered deliberate and motivated; targeting only one specific religious tradition and would be manifestation of larger problem of narrow-minded hate-based thinking. You may learn more about a few of the faith-based medical and dental charitable organizations specific to other religious traditions. on the following links.
Christian medical and dental associations
Islamic medical and dental associations
Jewish medical and dental associations
Sikh, Jain, and others medical and dental associations
Please don’t discriminate against Hindus by frivolous critique of a charitable organization for including the word Hindu in the organization’s name. We humbly request you to think about why Hindus are targeted and ridiculed when they do some charitable work while taking pride in their identity. Isn’t it due to centuries of colonialism and Hindumisia? Hindus are also equal human beings and shouldn’t be singled out for taking pride in their spiritual identity and religious heritage while doing various charitable activities under the banner of HPI.
